WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?

WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? … PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

James C. Hunter said,“I never cease to be amazed that organizations do not insist that their leaders be continually improving and persistently working toward becoming the best leaders they can be. With the awesome responsibility of leading others and the high stakes involved, it seems obvious to me that organizations would focus their attention on helping their leaders develop their leadership skills and therby their character.” It is vitally important that leaders and potential leaders tap into their inner well of passion, motivation and ability to amplify personal [team] growth and development.
“We need leaders of inspired idealism, leaders to whom are granted great visions, who dream greatly and strive to make their dreams come true; who can kindle the people with the fire from their own burning souls.” As stated by former President Roosevelt this is what leadership means.
The study of ‘leadership’ consists of many different but yet connected parts; the concept of leadership perhaps even a complex one. Even in asking the question‘What is Leadership?’; one immediately conjures up words like ‘character’, ‘passion’,'vision’, ‘inspiration’, ‘motivation’, ‘excellence’, ‘empowering’, ‘charisma’, ‘integrity’ and ‘honesty’.
In a quest to further understand leadership and to be a leader one finds themselve on a daily journey, a journey which breathes life into life itself. It encompasses the reading and study of many great books: the Holy Bible, John Maxwell ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’, Jim Collins ‘Good to Great’, Thomas J. Peters ‘In Search of Excellence’, Robin S. Sharma ‘Leadership Wisdom’, Paul J. Meyer ‘Become The Coach You Were Meant To Be’, Chris Brady|Orrin Woodward ‘Launching A Leadership Revolution’, Dale Carnegie ‘How To Win Friends and Influence People’, Stephen Covey ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’, Norman Vincent Peale ‘The Power Of Positive Thinking’: and this list is by no means exhaustive.

It is important and helpful to turn to the experts. The following is a short list:

  1. New Testament, Matthew, XV, 14: If the blind lead the blind both shall fall into the ditch.
  2. Wendell Wilkie: Education is the mother of leadership.
  3. Voltaire: The right of commanding is no longer an advantage transmitted by nature; like an inheritance, it is the fruit of labors, the price of courage.
  4. Thomas D. Bailey: Conductors of great symphony orchestras do not play every musical instrument; yet through leadership the ultimate production is an expressive and unified combination of tones.
  5. Franklin Field: Few people are born leaders. Leadership is achieved by ability, alertness, experience and keeping posted; by willingness to accept responsibility; a knack of getting along with people; an open mind, and a head that stays clear under stress.
  6. George Matthew Adams: The greatest asset in leadership is courage. Cowards never lead. Leadership requires great patience. No one will follow an irritable or impatient leader. Leadership requires tact, fairness and confidence. One man can’t lead another who distrusts his leadership. Many other things are important — but these things are imperative.
  7. John W. Dodge: A leader of men must make decisions quickly; be independent; act and stand firm; be a fighter; speak openly, plainly, frankly; make defeat his lessons; cooperate; coordinate; use the best of any alliances or allies; walk with active faith courageously toward danger or the unknown; create a staff; know, love and represent the best interests of his followers; be loyal, true, frank and faithful; reward loyalty; have a high, intelligent and worthy purpose and ideal. Do justice, love mercy; fear no man but fear only God.
  8. Bill George: The leader’s job is to provide an empowering environment that enables employees to serve their customers snd provides them the training, education, and support they need.
  9. Charles Reynolds Brown: Give a man integrity, common sense, and a sense of humor, and he has in him the main essentials necessary for leadership.
  10. Kenneth O. Gangel: I consider leadership to be the exercise of one’s special gifts under the call of God to serve a certain group of people in achieving the goals God has given them toward the end of glorifying Christ.
  11. Dr. George S. Benson: A vital ingredient of leadership is the courage to buck the stream, a willingness to face unpopularity if sound logic requires it. Most of the worthwhile advances in America have come as a result of sound and courageous leadership. In today’s world, good ideas and a little imagination make a big difference. They separate the valuable individual from the average performer, the productive research project from the fizzle, the profitable sales campaign from the dud, the prosperous nation from the poor one, the successful company from the also-ran.

In reading the above we certainly get a clear picture of what leadership is and when we include the following from John Maxwell;

“Leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less. People have so many misconceptions about Leadership. When they hear that someone has an impressive title or an assigned leadership position, they assume that he is a leader. Sometimes that’s true. But titles don’t have much value when it comes to leading. True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed, or assigned. It comes only from influence, and that can’t be mandated. It must be earned.”  ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’

we can envision our own leadership Picasso!

What I have seen and experienced is this; “Leadership is indeed earned! We are all children of God, thus we are/deserve to be loved and respected, however, leadership and trust must be earned. It is not negotiable.”Author Jim Collins, stated in ‘Good to Great’, “Leaders have ambition beyond their own personal self-interest. They are not satisfied with personal success only, but focus entirely upon furthering the vision of the enterprise or the team.”

“Leadership is a journey, it is a way of life which breathes life into life itself.”

SOAR WITH THE EAGLE

SOAR WITH THE EAGLE – PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

The majestic Eagle! The eagle soars through the skies with power, grace and beauty. The eagle symbolizes courage, strength, spirit, wisdom, freedom, meditation, perspective, vision, insight, balance and connection with a higher power.

… but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.    ISAIAH 40:31

The eagle epitomizes or embodies the spirit and essential characteristics of Leadership and Entrepreneurship. In general, the eagle enjoys the reputation as the “King of  Birds”, while the North American Bald Eagle, the national symbol of the United States government, has been a powerful symbol of the country’s role as leader of the free world.

The bald eagle was chosen as the emblem of the United States of America on June 20, 1782 because of this great strength, courage, long life and majestic look. The eagle is a symbol of freedom, living on the tops of lofty mountains(peaks) and sweeping into the valleys below amid the solitary grandeur of nature.

In his book, ‘Peaks and Valleys’, Spencer Johnson, M.D. defines Peaks and Valleys in life. He states; Peaks are moments when you appreciate what you have…Valleys are moments when you long for what is missing. In ‘Authentic Leadership’, Bill George states,”Although we may be born with leadership potential, all of us have to develop ourselves to become good leaders.” It would seem that a leadership development process must take place to grow, cultivate and develop leadership ability. Just like the eagle who acquires great strength, courage, spirit and wisdom while majestically sweeping to lofty peaks and valleys, we too must develop into leaders who possess the characteristics of the eagle! Kouzes and Posner in The Leadership Challenge said, “What we have discovered and rediscovered, is that leadership is not the private reserve of a few charismatic men and women. It is a process ordinary people use when they are bringing forth the best from themselves and others. What we’ve discovered is that people make extraordinary things happen by liberating the leader within everyone.”

In their book, ‘Launching A Leadership Revolution’, Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward identify ‘The Cycle of Achievement’ and the components of this cycle. The Cycle of Achievement includes:

  1. Vision
  2. Goal Setting
  3. Game Planning
  4. Working
  5. Seeking Counsel

When one reflects and focuses on the above characteristics of the eagle we gain much insight into ‘The Cycle of Achievement’  and the qualities and characteristics which allow a leader to soar with the eagle. The eagle has razor sharp vision, can see great distances and can look directly into the sun without being blinded. A leader must not be blinded and it is of paramount importance to have a very clear vision of tomorrow’s reality. Kouses and Posner said, “Leaders inspire a shared vision. They gaze across the horizon of time, imagining the attractive opportunities that are in store when they and their constituents arrive at a distant destination. Leaders have a desire to make something happen, to change the way things are, to create something that no one else has ever created before. In some ways leaders live their lives backwards. They see pictures in their mind’s eye of what the results will look like even before they’ve started their project, much as an architect draws a blueprint or an engineer builds a model.” The spirit of the eagle personified!

The spirit of the eagle is a symbol to many cultures. Eagles are represented in numerous artifacts and legends of Native Americans. Some tribes considered it to be the Great Spirit itself and the bird whose feathers were given as great prizes was sometimes referred to as the Thunderbird because of its propensity to spread its wings and fly directly into the powerful updrafts as storms approach. Just like the eagle, a Leader must spread their wings and fly straight into the storm and meet the challenge to grow, develop and to augment the growth and development of his/her team.

To the Chinese culture the eagle is a symbol of strength. An eagle shown perched in a pine tree is a respected gift to an older man. This gift wishing him the strength of an eagle and longevity of a pine-tree. In Greek culture the eagle is often seen as Zeus’s carrier of thunder and was thought to be the only bird living on Mt. Olympus. It is depicted as a symbol of leadership. References to Eagles is made in great numbers in Christian literature. During the Exodus, God bore Israel safely away from the Egyptians upon eagle’s wings (Exodus 19:4). The early Judean  church was granted the “wings of a great eagle” to flee from the siege in Jerusalem in 70 A.D.: Saul and Jonathan were “swifter than eagles” (2 Samuel 1:23).

Empower the  grace, beauty, courage, passion, wisdom, freedom, power and strength of the majestic eagle on your Leadership and Entrepreneurship Journey!

THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN ! on “TRIUMPHANT THURSDAY”

THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN! : TRIUMPHANT THURSDAY : PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

Stephen Covey, author of ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’, explains that between stimulus and response we have a choice of how we are going to reactWe are ’response able’, or put together we are responsible. That is where great attitudes come from: knowing we have a choice in the matter and making the mature choice to maintain a positive mental attitude!

The Man Who Thinks He Can!

If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don’t!
If you’d like to win, but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch that you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in the state of mind!

If you think you’re outclassed, you are;
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself
before you can win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the strongest or fastest man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can!

Walter D. Wintle

ATTITUDE is how we mentally look at the world and people around us. Our attitudes determine our behavior or reactions which tell the entire world what is inside our minds. Attitudes determine our destiny, our quality of life and our success! The quality of attitudes affect the quality of our life. A POSITIVE ATTITUDE COMPLETES THE PERFECT ‘YOU’!

Say “I Will!” and then ‘Stick To It’

KEEP ‘A-TRYING’ – PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

Say “I will!” and then stick to to it-
That’s the only way to do it.
Don’t build up a while and then
Tear the whole thing down again.
Fix the goal you wish to gain,
Then go at it heart and brain,
And, though clouds shut out the blue,
Do not dim your purpose true
With your sighing.
Stand erect, and, like a man,
Know “They can who think they can!”
Keep a-trying.

Had Columbus, half seas o’er,
Turned back to his native shore,
Men would not, today, proclaim
Round the world his deathless name.

So must we sail on with him
Past horizons far and dim,
Till at last we own the prize
That belongs to him that tries
With faith undying;
Own the prize that all may win
Who, with hope, through thick and thin
Keep a-trying.

A Road Map for CHANGE

A Road Map for CHANGE – PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

A highlight of my run last evening and today was recognizing that ‘Running’ can be and is ‘A Road Map for CHANGE’ both in our physical and spiritual lives. Mr. George Leonard in ‘The Ultimate Athlete’ notes that running is the essence of most sports played on dry land. Soccer, baseball, football, basketball, rugby, field-hockey, cricket, frisbee and various forms of tag all have their essence in running. When one strips most land sports of all the rules that give them their separate characteristics, the essence remains, and the essence is running. Running is a journey which helps us discover that our body is a marvelous thing but it also is a simple form of exercise!

  • Recognize that your spiritual life is a journey!

“And I am sure that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on that day when Christ Jesus comes back again.” Philippians 1:6

Dr. George Sheehan is the man credited with triggering philosophical reflection about running. In his book, ‘On Running’, Dr. Sheehan speaks of how the body mirrors the soul and the mind. Therefore, it makes good sense to become proficient at listening to one’s body in order that one might eventually hear from one’s totality – from the complex, unique person that one is. Running is important in my life because it has allowed me to discover that as one completes oneself physically, it benefits one totally. It allows for one to remain focused on the destination.

  • Set your sights on the destination!

“And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like Him and reflect His glory even more.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

There are some creative and fun approaches to running. The New Age approach to sports in certain areas deemphasizes competitive tendencies and invites the participant to enjoy the experience itself rather than just focusing on ‘getting there’. In an article entitled “Creative Running: Tips from a New Age Coach”, running is approached as an activity filled with fun and imagination-play. For example, when running up a hill imagine there is a giant hand pushing you from behind or let the wind gently push you along, and the sun fill your body with soft, golden energy.

  • Ask God for help with your Road Blocks!

“…let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1

It has now been abundantly verified by numerous studies that runners are more likely than other athletes to experience striking psychological alterations. Excellent evidence from over 40 studies suggests that running itself contributes to mental health. These studies focusing on exercise and personality, exercise and mental health, exercise and intelligence and other aspects of human psychology suggest that running and exercise affect us deeply.

The precise mechanisms by which running affects us so deeply have become more understood. There are several conclusions: a) the changes result from an elevated body temperature or an increase in the brain’s blood supply; b) the changes are brought on by running’s repetitive rhythms which are almost hypnotic in nature; c) the changes result from the natural release of morphine-like chemicals called endorphins or from a natural stimulant called norepinephrine.

The bottom line is that running makes for more happy, fulfilled people. For a great many people who are exploring their potential, trying to become more fully what they are, running is instrumental in bringing new and fuller life, a higher level of wellness. As such, it is assisting them in realizing their human and spiritual aim.

This brings me to the last two stages of  the “Road MAP for Change”:

  • Learn how to Refuel! Have to be refueled everyday!

“He renews my strength. He guides me long right paths…” Psalm 23:3

  • Pause along the way to Celebrate the progress.

“O Lord my God, You have done many miracles for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.” Psalm 40.5

WHAT IS MONEY?

WHAT IS MONEY? — PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

What is money? Frank J. Wilson said; It is tangible enough — one can see it, feel it, hoard it, invest it, spend it, if one is fortunate enough to get it. What is it? It’s the roof over the head of a man, the floor under his feet, the pillow beneath his head, the food and drink in his stomach, the shoes on his feet, the clothes on his back. It’s what enables him to live! And all too often maybe it’s what causes him to die.

The late George Horace Lorimer, for many years editor of The Saturday Evening Post, once wrote these words: “It is a good thing to have money and the things that money can buy, but it is good, too, to check up once in awhile and make sure you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy.”

The things that money can’t buy would make a long list — here are some of them:

  • Money can’t buy real friendship – friendship must be earned.
  • Money can’t buy a clear conscience – square dealing is the price tag.
  • Money can’t buy the glow of good health – right living is the secret.
  • Money can’t buy happiness – happiness is a mental attitude and one may be as happy in a cottage as in a mansion.
  • Money can’t buy sunsets, singing birds and the music of the wind in the trees – these are as free as the air that we breathe.
  • Money can’t buy inward peace – peace is the result of a constructive philosophy on all facets of our life.
  • Money can’t buy character – character is what we are when we are alone with ourselves in the dark.

Continue the list yourself, if you wish. You’ll probably agree though that among the things that money can’t buy are some of the most valuable treasures LIFE has to offer. It is a good thing to check up now and then to be sure that we are not missing these things!

The Symphony of L.I.F.E.

The Symphony of LIFE – Path To Life Success

Have you ever experienced a day where your life has truly been a symphony?

The word ‘symphony’ is usually associated with music – a composition for orchestra , normally consisting of four movements, the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections. Over time…a moment, a day, a week, a year, a decade…we all come across ideas that change the way we think about ourselves. For me, this morning was one of those moments, and it became extremely clear that a well-lived life is more like a symphony than a solo. LIFE typically consists of eight areas:

  1. FAITH
  2. FAMILY
  3. FINANCES
  4. FITNESS
  5. FOLLOWING
  6. FREEDOM
  7. FRIENDS
  8. FUN

Source for Eight Areas: LIFE … Living Intentionally For Excellence, By Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward

The point takes nothing away from a solo, but there is something more important than our own show. Our individual performances are part of something much greater. In the grander scheme, we aren’t just here to sing our own song. All who are in Christ are members of an organization that in some ways is like a symphony orchestra. The human body is like an orchestra. Individual members, important as they are, work for a purpose greater than themselves.

Together the members of a symphony create carefully composed and orchestrated moods. Some are quiet and reflective. Others build with great energy. At the direction of the conductor, the members of a well-rehearsed orchestra move as one. In the wisdom of God, the members of the body of Christ are also designed to move with one another. When the people of Christ care for one another, they move like the rising and falling emotions of a symphony.

Without a director, the members of an orchestra could all be playing their own song. Even in the same symphony they could be on different pages. So too, the people of Christ need a great Conductor who can turn their individual contributions into shared music.

Without the leadership of Christ, we would be left looking for a leader worthy of our complete confidence. Apart from His direction, the church would be little more than a group of individuals stumbling through a piece of music no one really understands. Yet, in the noise of individual lives, Christ stands among us, ready to be our great Conductor. The composition is His. The music is His. And the orchestra, conceived and bought at a great price, is also His. Together we are rehearsing for a presentation far greater than any of us have yet imagined!

O sing a new song to the Lord; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

In his presence are majesty and splendour, strength, and honour in his holy place.

{Cf. Psalm 95.1, 6}

DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE U.S. ECONOMY?

DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE U.S. ECONOMY? — PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

As a discipline in scholarly form, economics is only two centuries old. Adam Smith wrote his path breaking  book, The Wealth of Nations in 1776.  Adam Smith, of course, represented only a beginning. In more than the century and a half that elapsed from the publication of  The Wealth of Nations to the publication of John Maynard Keynes’ The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money(1936), economics – or political economy, as it used to be called – went through many stages of development.

WHAT ECONOMICS IS: Everyone wants a short definition of economics, and in response to this demand, there is no shortage of supply. Here are a few such definitions:

  1. Economics is the study of those activities which, with or without money, involve exchange transactions among people.
  2. Economics is the study of men in their ordinary business of life, earning and enjoying a living.
  3. Economics is the study of how mankind goes about the business of organizing its consumption and production activities.
  4. Economics is the study of wealth and the global stock markets.
  5. Economics is the study of how to improve society.

This list may be a good one, but, Economists today agree on a general definition something like the following:

Economics is the study of how men and society end up choosing, with or without the use of money, to employ  scarce productive resources, which could have alternative uses, to produce various commodities. It studies how the commodities are distributed for consumption, now and in the future, among various people and groups in society. It analyses the costs and benefits of improving patterns of resource allocation. ~Samuelson**Scott

Reading and re-reading the above definition of economics we seem to recognize that we have an opportunity everyday to view an answer to the question; “Do you believe in the U.S. Economy?” Since so much of what drives stock prices is a function of mass psychology we receive a snapshot of confidence (yes, I believe) or lack of confidence (no, I don’t believe) everyday. When we are looking to the future it is sometimes helpful to glean important clues from the past. While each shock to the economy and the stock markets tends to be unique, human nature hasn’t changed much in the last 100 years.

The following are three extraordinary financial and/or political storms in the past 75 years:

  • Pearl Harbor. Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. On a long-term basis there is little doubt that the onset of World War II helped to snap the American economy out of a severe decade-long slump. But initially, Wall Street reacted with trepidation to the bombing and to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s declaration of war against Japan. In fact, the S&P 500 was still off by 10% (excluding dividends) six months after the sneak attack. Eventually, however, exhibiting confidence, stocks embarked on a powerful climb, rising by 38% after three years and by 58 percent after five years.
  • Kennedy assassination. Stocks closed lower by almost three percent on the day President John F. Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas in November 1963. Because the American economy was in relatively sound condition and confidence was high at the time, the broad equity market recovered quickly. Within six months, the S&P 500 was up almost 13 percent, and the benchmark had risen 20 percent by the first anniversary of the shooting.
  • Hostages in Iran. On November 4, 1979 a group of radical students took 66 American embassy workers hostage in Tehran. Over the ensuing 14 months — up until the very moment Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as President on January 20, 1981 — the crisis dominated the news headlines. But while stocks initially responded positively (up 11% after three months), a sharp spike in energy prices fanned inflationary fires that were already building, leading to sky-high interest rates and a severe double-dip recession. Yet the remarkable resiliency of the American economy and high confidence level is evident in one statistic: Five Years after that dark day in Tehran, the average U.S. stock was 63 percent higher.

note: calculations based on Standard & Poor’s Daily Stock Price Indexes; The New York Times Almanac

In the past 12 years we have experienced ‘Times of Crisis”! Every year we extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the thousands of victims and their families who have suffered an incalculable human tragedy as a result of the hideous events of  September 11: the collapse of real estate prices, and lower equity prices. Confidence and belief has been shaken!

Yet, with global tensions seemingly on the rise again and other factors (beyond the current scope of this article) which would lead one to lose belief and confidence….. it is a time when courage, faith, belief, confidence, strength and passion in personal goals, business goals, spiritual goals and entrepreneurial goals is needed now! Sharing of courage, faith, belief, confidence, strength and passion is needed now!

Belief in the U.S. Economy is needed now, belief in the North American Economy is needed now, and because of strong inter-relationships with global trading partners, belief in the Global Economy is needed now!

Since we are now six days into 2012 your goals, budgets, plans and forecasts are probably written for this fiscal year. I invite you to revisit your goals and ask yourself, your team, your colleagues this question: “Do You Believe In The U.S. Economy?” If the answer is a resounding….YES…you may wish to be more optimistic and express this optimism on paper and further… share your optimism and your confidence!

FINDING YOUR 2012 PLACE IN THE SUN

FINDING YOUR 2012 PLACE IN THE SUN … PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

Maintaining a positive mental attitude in the face of today’s world is not easy. Our environment supports negativity. Most of what we read and watch in newspapers and on television is filled with negative input — natural disasters, fire, murder, famine, international tensions, lawsuits, divorce, and more. If the majority of your input is negative, the output will be as well, because the mind processes thoughts like a computer. We are bombarded by negative information because negativity sells, but sells what? Remember,

  • A Bad Attitude Produces Bad Results
  • A Fair Attitude Produces Fair Results
  • A Good Attitude Produces Good Results

Success breeds success; failure breeds failure. Let’s examine success, the result of a positive, ” I Can “ attitude. An ” I Can “ attitude sets a positive cycle in motion. Your faith and belief system programs the mental attitude of a winner. You do what you have to do to succeed. You can be successful; you can have positive results. This leads you to take great leaps forward, which in turn, breeds still more positive results. Developing a positive mental attitude can carry you beyond the vicious circle of negativity to the victory circle. It is easy to write about and more difficult to put into practice, but it is inevitably, more rewarding.

WINNERS NEVER QUIT — QUITTERS NEVER WIN

You do have a purpose for everything you want in life. You have a purpose for your career, your business, a purpose for your marriage (if married), a purpose for your lifestyle goals, and a purpose for your monetary and retirement goals. You would not invest yourself in any of them if you did not. Look again and you will see each purpose incorporates goals. You use your goal to focus energy on attaining your primary purpose!

Setting Goals

As you go about establishing goals, it is important to state each goal specifically. Make sure you include the following guidelines:

  • Be absolutely honest with yourself. In the final analysis it is your own desires, not those of others, that will dictate what you achieve.
  • Be passionate about your goals. If you don’t embrace your goals with a passion, the desire to achieve them will fade.
  • Don’t lose your perspective. Goals are not carved in stone; they can be changed, modified, or removed if your life circumstances change unexpectedly.

Establishing goals clarifies and establishes direction. Listed below are a number of goals that you may wish to consider. Rank the importance of each goal to you on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high):

  1. Maintain my standard of living
  2. Improve my standard of living
  3. Choose a less expensive lifestyle
  4. Remain in my current career
  5. Change my career
  6. Change my business interests
  7. Plan a major holiday or sabbatical year
  8. Buy or upgrade my residence
  9. Buy vacation property
  10. Buy expensive items; car, boat, RV
  11. Maintain a disciplined investment program
  12. Maintain Charitable donations
  13. Maintain education funds for children
  14. Maintain my estate for spouse and/or children
  15. Achieve financial independence at age___
  16. Retire early at age ___
  17. Other ______
  18. Other ______
  19. Other ______
  20. Other ______

Are you accomplishing your goals? What can you do about them? What will you do about them? Look back and list your five most important goals.

Don’t Procrastinate — Graduate

Formalizing Your Goals

Every goal you have should be in writing. Committing “pen to paper” is the first serious step of commitment to your goal. The exercise defines it — for you. When listing your goals, employ the following guidelines:

  • Make your statement short and concise. (7 words or less)
  • Make your goals realistic, so they can be achieved.
  • Your goals should be challenging, so that you must strive to achieve them.
  • Allow goals to overlap with other goals.
  • Visualize your goals, imagining the experience of achieving them.

Setting Objectives

Objectives are measurable actions taken to accomplish goals. Now that you have defined your goals, develop a plan to put the process in motion by setting objectives. Objectives generate the urgency needed for inspiration. Set your objectives by specifying:

  • What you will do
  • When you will do it
  • How much you will do to achieve your goal

The objective you establish will provide effective solutions for reaching your goal as long as the objective is:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable within a limited time
  • Identified with an actual result

Utilize the common ingredients of successful planning; Purpose, Goal, Objectives, Plan of Action, Planning Strategies and you will be well on your way to “Finding Your 2012 Place In The Sun” !

NEED For STRONG TEAM LEADERSHIP

NEED For STRONG TEAM LEADERSHIP — PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

Some team leaders or managers bend over backwards to make team/group meetings happy; other leaders try equally as hard to make their meetings sweat sessions of tensions and nerves. Research indicates that neither approach is particularly effective. Studies show that:

  • To be most effective, teams require mutual trust and respect, but not necessarily close personal relationships.
  • Teams that are highly productive are described as highly satisfying by team members. The emphasis is on producing achievable results and people enjoy being on a winning team.

Trust, respect, and productivity are the hallmarks of the skilled team leader and enrich the climate of team meetings.

The better the leadership, the more efficiently the team works. What makes a strong team leader has changed over the years.

Research now shows that variations on the old army approach of “I order and you jump” usually doesn’t work well on most teams and in most organizations. While effective team leaders still take ultimate responsibility for the outcome:

  • they involve and empower others to the greatest degree possible, and —
  • they allow control to shift during the team meeting so that different people are given a leadership role. When someone makes a suggestion, gives valuable opinions, encourages a colleague, or resolves a conflict, at that moment, they are allowed to provide leadership to the team.

This active involvement and shared leadership by team members has proven to generate better decisions and to build higher team commitment to making those decisions work out successfully.

Strong Team Leadership today includes the ability to bring people out, empower them and to get them actively involved!

A large body of research shows that most team leaders are unaware of how much their teams defer to them. Leaders can easily influence the outcome of team decisions more than they realize (in a lot of cases).

Mistake Number One: Less effective leaders talk too much and demand too much air time for themselves. They insist upon center stage. Unfortunately, the more ‘on’ they are, the more they turn their team members off. Less effective leaders speak out too much, too soon. Be careful about stating your opinion too strongly, or as if it is FACT, at the beginning of a meeting…unless you simply want everyone else to bow to your wishes. (not!)

Mistake Number Two: Less effective leaders try to control too much, period! And it’s not necessarily all verbal. The old adage “Actions speak louder than words’ is true. Team members soon pick up the underlying message if the leader, in one way or another, is planning on pulling all of the strings. They often tune out in return, and tell their leader only what he or she wants to here.

Leadership Values To Consider:

  1. Leaders are responsible for maintaining and enhancing the self-esteem of team members.
  2. Leaders must invite active participation. Highest team decisions come only when the resources of the team are effectively utilized.
  3. Without leadership trust toward team members, high-quality output rarely happens.
  4. Leaders must establish two-way open communication.
  5. Leaders are not threatened by a team. They emphasize teamwork. They encourage mutual support. They do not attempt to divide and conquer. They build a strong sense of team and pride.
  6. Effective leaders expect only the best! Their goals are high. Effective leaders demonstrate excellence!
