“ONLY A DAD”

Only a dad, with a tired face

Coming home from the daily race;

Bringing little of gold and fame

To show how well he has played the game,

But glad in his heart that his own rejoice

To see him come and to hear his voice.

Only a dad, of a brood of four,

One of ten million men or more,

Plodding along in the daily strife,

Bearing the whips and scorn of life

With never a whimper of pain or hate,

For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,

Merely one of the surging crowd,

Toiling, striving, from day to day,

Facing whatever may come his way;

Silent, whenever the harsh condemn,

And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad, but he gives his all

To smooth the way for his children small;

Doing, with courage stern and grim,

The deeds that his father did for him.

35 By this will all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

We come into this world completely helpless and wholly dependent upon a mother’s love for the warmth and food and care that keeps us alive. Certainly each of us owes our mother eternal gratitude for the things she did during those first months when we were healthy and comfortable only because she anticipated our infant needs.

It is natural and normal for all of us to outgrow our mother’s authority, but even when that time comes we do not leave her influence behind. This is part of our character forever. It arises from the fact that a mother makes the home. The child’s earliest years are spent under her guidance and in that time the bonds of love grow strong – the maternal influence secure. To concede this is no disrespect to any father. It is the way wise old nature planned it.

We are fortunate indeed whose mothers loved us too much to be soft and doting mothers. We are better men and women if our mothers loved us enough to enforce reasonable discipline. We can always be thankful that she often had the courage to say, “No,” when our desires were strong and our judgement weak. When she mixed strictness with understanding, she helped prepare us for life. If she wanted us to enjoy all the good things appropriate to our age, but sometimes pointed out that family circumstances called for sacrifice; she prepared us for an adult world in which we do not get everything we want. She helped us realize that we must find our happiness in what we have and not in something that may be beyond our grasp.

Those of us who have enjoyed material success can be certain that our mothers contributed something to it. She is part of whatever we are. Those of us who have not fully measured up to her hopes can be equally sure that we retain her love in spite of any disappointments. Certainly no woman who has ever accepted the responsibilities of true motherhood has deserted her son or daughter in need or in trouble. 

We all owe something, too, to that thoughtful woman who conceived the idea of Mother’s Day. We need that annual reminder of what our mothers mean to us. If they are with us in this world, surely we want to let them know that our love and affection are sincere. If they live with us only in memory, then on Mother’s Day we want to take time to thank God that we have such a beautiful love to remember.

This week I attended a Leadership discussion on ‘Giving Back’ and ‘Charity’ in our modern day world. This discussion evolved around many socioeconomic themes, ‘The Sociology of Education’ and the impact of technology/social media on ‘Charity’ in our modern day world. Suffice it to say for the purpose of this article one could find no better definition for ‘Giving Back’ or true ‘Charity’ than the Biblical definition given to us by Saint Luke.

St. Luke 27 – 38

²⁷ “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

²⁸ bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

²⁹ Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.

³⁰ Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.

³¹ Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.

³² If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

³³ If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

³⁴ If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.

³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.

³⁶   Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

³⁷ “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.

³⁸ Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
