What is Love?

What is LOVE?

What does Love mean? A group of professionals posed the question; “What does love mean?” to a group of four(4) to eight(8) year old’s and the answers they received were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.

“LOVE is what’s in the room with you at Christmas

if you stop opening presents and listen.”

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.

You know that your name is safe in their mouth.”

“LOVE is when someone hurts you. And you get so mad but you don’t

yell at them because you know it would hurt their feelings.”

*****

“Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.  …..  Now Faith, Hope, and Love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is Love.”

1 Corinthians 12.31 – 13.13

TIME and YOU

TIME and YOU

Take time to work, it is the price of success.

Take time to think, it is the source of power.

Take time to play, it is the secret of youth.

Take time to read, it is the foundation of wisdom.

Take time to pray, it is the way to Heaven.

Take time to dream, it is the way to the stars.

Take time to laugh, it is the music of the soul.

Take time to look around, it is the short cut to unselfishness.

Time is one of God’s greatest gifts, and yet how often men devise ingenious methods to make it pass lightly and quickly and refer to it as “killing time”.

The value of time arises from:

  1. Its brevity. The time is short. “We all do fade as a leaf.”
  2. Its uncertainty. “Boast not thyself of tomorrow.”
  3. The fact that it is irrecoverable. The hand on the dial of time can never be turned back.
Time is given so that we may prepare for eternity. The watchword of the moment should be now. Artisans of the past devised the sundial to cope with the magic and mystery of time. That’s why each sundial offers a thought for remembrance with minutes that pass. Here are some:
  • An illusionist wrote: “Time passes only when the sun shines.”
  • A dreamer dreamed: “So flies time away.”
  • An optimist’s inscription: “I record none but sunny hours.”
  • And the realist: “It is later than you think.”
“Dost thou love life? Then waste not time; for time is the stuff that life is made of.”

AGING AND RETIREMENT … AGE IS ONLY A NUMBER

AGING AND RETIREMENT … AGE IS ONLY A NUMBER … PATH TO LIFE SUCCESS

The notion that after you reach 65 and retire, your health and vigor must suffer is one of the more common misconceptions people have about retirement. In truth, retirement has little or nothing to do with declining health or well-being. There are many 30- and 40-year olds who are flabby, out of shape, and sickly, just are there are 70- and 80-year-olds who are robust, fit, and young in the truest sense. Reality is often the very reverse of what we think!

Being young and employed or unemployed often means being under considerable daily stress, year in and year out. This takes its toll on health and fitness. When you retire, you are unchained from the energy-sapping treadmill. You find abundant leisure time to devote to such things as exercise and nutrition. This accounts for the common observation by retirees that they become more fit and vibrantly healthy at this stage of life if they make the choice to do so!

AGE IS ONLY A NUMBER

With the strong advertising of the Youth Culture we have been guided, expected, and encouraged by advertisers in the past to act and dress young. The youth culture has itself come of age and, along with the rest of the population whose taste this vast group tend to share, has seemed to have cast aside its obsessive preoccupation with being Peter Pans and Tinkerbells. Attitudes are more flexible and much of the stigma regarding age has gone. Age is but a number and no more a reliable a predictor of a person’s character, lifestyle, or creative potentials than gossip or card readings.

With people of all ages taking to fitness-promoting activities, launching new careers, becoming entrepreneurs, starting businesses, returning to school, and becoming involved in the community, the notion of “acting your age” has lost whatever meaning it once may have had.

Chronological Versus Physiological Age

When we speak of age, we tend to think of chronological age or age defined by calendar. There is a truer measure called physiological age which is determined by factors such as heredity, nutrition, exercise, stress control, and outlook on life. People who look and feel younger than their actual years often are.

Recent studies indicate that the gap between chronological and physiological age is widening. Physiologically, the average 50-year-old is significantly younger than his or her parents were at the same age. Our grandparents tended to arrive at midlife exhausted from their labors, burned out, and old.

Today, in athletic competition at the senior’s level, men in their 70′s are commonly running marathons in times that better Olympic world records set in the early 1900′s! A few years ago, a 57-year-old cyclist finished eighth in the world in a gruelling 500-mile open competition held in California. My suggestion to you is that if you’re planning to slow down, wait ’til you’re 90! WOW!

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS. . .Those Little Things!

The creation of  a thousand forests is in one acorn.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

THOSE LITTLE THINGS

Oh, it’s just the little homely things,
The unobtrusive, friendly things,
The “won’t-you-let-me-help-you” things,
That make our pathway light.

And its just the jolly joking things,
The “never-mind-the-trouble” things,
The “laugh-with-me-it’s funny” things,
That make the world seem bright.

For all the countless famous things,
The wondrous record-breaking things,
Those never-can-be-equaled things,
That all the papers cite.

Are not like little human things,
The every-day-encountered things,
The “just-because-I-like-you” things,
That make us happy quite.

So here’s to all the little things,
The done-and-then-forgotten things,
Those “oh,-it’s-simply-nothing” things,
That make life worth the fight.
~ Grace Haines

Mr. Jack Mitchell, in “The Wall Street Journal Business Bestseller”…..“HUG YOUR CUSTOMERS” … knows the importance of “THOSE LITTLE THINGS”! Mr. Mitchell states; “We shower our customers with attention. There’s no doubt in my mind that our philosophy can be applied to selling just about anything — from aircraft engines to beanbags.”

The only way to stay in business is with customers, and Jack Mitchell knows how to attract them, and how to keep them. He has a deceptively simple but winning approach to customer service — that a “relationship” is at the heart of every transaction! Jack’s business philosophy is based on “hugs” — personal touches that impress and satisfy the customer!

In 1936, Dale Carnegie, introduced us to “How To Win Friends And Influence People” and “The Big Secret of Dealing With People”! “If You Want To Gather Honey, Don’t Kick Over The Beehive.”! Professor John Dewey says that the deepest urge in human nature is “the desire to be important.” Remember that phrase: “the desire to be important.”

In 1982, Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman, Jr., introduced In Search of EXCELLENCE, Lessons from America’s Best Run Companies. A simple summary of what their research uncovered on the customer attribute is this: the excellent companies really are close to their customers. That’s it. Other companies talk about it; the excellent companies do it. “In observing the excellent companies, and specifically the way they interact with customers, what we found most striking was the consistent presence of obsession.”

In 1985, Tom Peters and Nancy Austin, introduced A PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE”, The Leadership Difference. This entire book is about quality. Quality, above all, is about care, people, passion, consistency, eyeball contact and gut reaction. Quality involves living the message of the possibility of perfection and infinite improvement, living it day in and day out, decade by decade. Quality is about passion and pride! Quality is about people. Quality is a function of commitment to “People, People, People”.

A strong people philosophy is at the heart of it:

  • People are people . . . not personnel.
  • People don’t dislike work . . . help them to understand mutual objectives and they’ll drive themselves to unbelievable excellence.
  • The best way to really train people is with an experienced mentor   . . . and on the job.
  • People have ego and development needs . . . and they’ll commit themselves only to the extent that they can see ways of satisfying those needs.
  • People can not be truly motivated by other people   . . . that door is locked from the inside; they should work in an atmosphere that fosters self-motivation . . . self-assessment . . . and self-confidence.
  • People should work in a climate that is challenging, invigorating, and fun . . . and the rewards should be related as directly as possible to performance.
  • When people are in an atmosphere of trust, they’ll put themselves at risk; only through risk is there growth . . . reward . . . self-confidence . . . leadership.

RUNNING FOR OTHERS | You Can’t Lose When You Help Others WIN!

You Can’t Lose When You Help Others WIN!
Tom Knapp never won a race during his entire high school track career. Tom was a “pusher.” It was his task to set the pace for his fellow team members, who would then beat him to the finish line. When he ran a successful race he was enabling a fellow teammate to win. Even though Tom never had enough reserve energy for the final sprint to victory, the coach considered him a valuable member of the team. In a similar way, the New Testament tells us to run our race of faith with the success of others in mind. “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out for not only his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Our example of such living is Jesus Christ, who left the glory of heaven to share our humanity and die on the cross so that we can have eternal life (vv.5-8). If the encouragement of our example helps another person to flourish and be successful, we should rejoice. When the eternal prizes are awarded for faithful service to God, a lot of “pushers” will be wearing blue ribbons. Until then, let’s keep running so that others can WIN!

Friendship…”We Need Friends To Win.”

We need friends to win. We need friends to help motivate and inspire us. We need friends to speak well of us to others. We need friends to stand by us and believe in us. We need friends to point out our shortcomings and show us how we can improve ourselves. We do need friends to inspire us. We need friends who use their influence to help us succeed.

The best way to have friends is to be one. “If you see a friend slipping away from you,” wrote David Grayson, “stop whatever you are doing and bring him or her back, for friendship is one thing you cannot afford to be without.”

As ‘Norman Vincent Peale’ so eloquently stated; ” A true friend knows when you need a word of affection and encouragement and knows just how to say it. He is one of those wonderfully thoughtful people who is sensitive, or tuned in, to the hearts and minds of others. He has that fine sense of timing which enables him to say the word of comfort and strengthening  just when needed.”

Barbara Coloroso, in her #1 National Bestseller , ‘Kids are Worth It!’ states; “I WILL NOT TREAT A CHILD IN A WAY I MYSELF WOULD NOT WANT TO BE TREATED”. It can also be said; “I will not treat a Friend in a way I myself  would not want to be treated.”

ATTITUDE…

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we can not change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing that we can do is play on the one string that we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.”    ~ Charles Swindoll

This is an amazing description and vision of attitude. WE do have a choice everyday regarding the attitude that we will embrace for that day…that moment…that game…our loved ones…our friends…our community! Embrace the moment…embrace it with all the love, passion, desire, excitement, courage, enthusiasm, and commitment that you possibly can!  …Hughie Bagnell
